Gateway Cities & Global Value Chains

Gateway Cities and Global Value Chains

The main objective of this project is to study the impact of the strategic positioning of four Canadian cities as trade gateways on urban politics and development. More precisely, their role as facilitators in the implementation of global value chains will be investigated. The four cities in question are Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, all designated by the Canadian government as key locations and nodes in its trade gateway and corridor strategy. We address three main questions:

  • How are the impacts of global value chains managed by the four cities?
  • What governance schemes are set up to accommodate value chains?
  • How are these schemes and their stakeholders connected to the democratic process and to citizen organizations at the urban level?
