Madhuparna Gupta is an Instructor at the Department of Global Development Studies, Saint Mary’s University, Canada. A Gold Medalist and department topper in both her BA and MA Programs, she has received her Ph.D. in International Relations from Jadavpur University, India. Before moving to Halifax, she was an Assistant Professor of Political Science in Kolkata, India. She has authored and edited books, and published research articles on issues of Political Science and International Relations in academic volumes and journals. She has presented papers, delivered lectures and Keynote speech in seminars and conferences, and served as panelist in discussions on Gender and Development, International Security, Atlantic Canada and the Indo-Pacific Strategy, India’s Election 2024, Indian Foreign Policy, Anti-Racism and International Human Rights.
Madhuparna’s research insights on ‘Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) and Climate Change’, was incorporated in the report titled, Weathering What’s Ahead: Climate Change Risk and Nova Scotia’s Well-being, published by the Department of Climate Change, Government of Nova Scotia, 2022. Her interest about the colonial connection that exists between Canada and India, has led her to publish the research article titled, Bonds of Empire in Canada’s History, April-May 2023 edition. Her Podcast titled, India and Canada: Bonds of Empire, hosted by Canada’s History, is the winner of the Canadian Ethnic Media Award in the Podcast Category, in November 2023.
As an Instructor of German Language in India, Madhuparna has translated government document and books into German Language. In Canada, she was a part of a project that has translated the celebrated First World War poem, ‘In Flanders Field’ by John McCrae, to over 60 different languages. She has translated this poem to Bengali and German languages. This multi-lingual project has received the Canadian Ethnic Media Association (CEMA) Award in 2020 and was nominated for the Governor General’s Award in 2021. The book containing the translations, has been published at the XIV World Poetry Festival La lyre émigrée, Belgium, in 2023.
She is actively involved with the Canadian International Council (CIC)-Halifax Branch, to facilitate Canada’s role in foreign affairs, international business and trade.
