Born in Hungary, Anna Porter was educated in New Zealand and has a B.A. and a M.A. from Canterbury University. She began her publishing career in London, England, and came to Canada in 1968, joining McClelland & Stewart in 1969, and rising to Vice President and Editor-in-Chief. In 1978, she became President of McClelland-Bantam Inc. In 1981, she started Key Porter Books Limited of which she is President. Key Porter is a 50 per cent shareholder in Seal Books, which published such authors as Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowatt and W.O. Mitchell.

Anna Porter is dedicated to Canadian publishing and has worked to raise its profile internationally. She is recognized as a dedicated supporter of Canadian authors and fought the imposition of the GST on books and has lectured and given speeches throughout Canada about culture and publishing. Anna Porter is on the Board of Laurential Financial, People Jewellers Ltd., Hollinger Inc., UNICEF Canada and the World Wildlife Fund Canada. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1992.
