Spencer Wiechert BComm’19
Frank H. Sobey Award Recipient 2019-2020
October 2019
For Spencer Wiechert, receiving the Frank H. Sobey Award represents both an end and a beginning. He was partway through his fifth and final year at the Sobey School of Business when he got the good news via a hand-delivered letter and cheque.
“What a way to wrap up my last year here! And what an amazing start! This recognition, financial support, and strong network will be a tremendous foundation for my career.”
Spencer graduated in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Commerce, double majoring in accounting and marketing. On September 30th, he’ll begin his new job as an assurance associate with PwC. “I’ll be auditing public companies that require quarterly and year-end audits, simple review audits for shareholders and complex audits, and doing compliance work.” Spencer will also pursue his CPA designation.
Spencer’s involvement in the Saint Mary’s community is so extensive it’s impossible to list it all here. On campus alone, he held positions as VP of Marketing, Sobey School of Business Accounting Society; IT Director, Sobey School of Business Commerce Society; Co-Chair, SMU Residence Events Committee; SMU Here For Peers mentor; and Team Representative, SMU Athletic Council. He also played varsity football for four years, organized charity events, coordinated the SMU Community Food Room, worked as a teaching assistant, played intramural sports, and completed three co-op job placements.
In his “spare time,” Spencer also started video production business Wiechert Video in 2014, going on to produce a wide range of videos for clients, including the Saint Mary’s How-To series for international students, and football highlight reels for his friends moving on to the CFL. He hopes to fit this “side hustle” into his new life as a working professional.
For Spencer, a highlight of the Frank H. Sobey Award experience was the luncheon at Crombie House, where he met other award winners and networked with the Sobeys corporate team and other business trailblazers. “I’m honoured to join such an impressive group of leaders, and excited and determined to continue that leadership and make an impact in Atlantic Canada.”
“I am so grateful! This award has had a great deal of impact on my confidence as a young professional. It’s the recognition, just to see how far you’ve come, how you’ve grown. I came in hoping for a big scholarship in 2014, and I didn’t get that, and that drove me. And this was like a reward at the end saying all this work really did pay off!”
