Northwood Choose Health

NorthwoodImage1Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Northwood is one of the largest long term care, independent living and community outreach organization in Eastern Canada.

Six seminar-style work-life balance and stress-management sessions were conducted at Northwood on a monthy basis from February - July, 2006. Employees also participated in concurrent exercise and nutrition programs. Data were collected at the beginning of the program (Time 1), following the 3rd session (Time 2), and at the end of the program (Time 3).

Results of Choose Health

Significant increases in: Significant decreases in:
  • Positive Mood
  • Healthy lifestyle practices
  • Job related well-being*
  • Strain (i.e., physical symptoms)
  • Perceived stress
  • Work-life conflict
  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Negative mood*

Please note that negative mood did not decrease until Time 3. The initial gain in job-related well-being at Time 2 was not maintained at Time 3.

Workers Compensation Board Claims and Attendance Rates (2005 vs 2006)

  • 25% improvement in attendance from 2005 to 2006 (i.e., average days missed dropped from 8 to 6)
  • 18% reduction in Workers Compensation Board claims from 2005 to 2006 (i.e., average uses dropped from .22 to .18)
