Geoscience is a regulated profession in most of Canada (11 of the 13 provinces and territories). This means that legislative acts restrict the practice of geoscience to individuals and companies who are registered members of self-governing professional associations. Geoscientists Nova Scotia, also known as the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia (APGNS), is the provincial licensing body here in Nova Scotia. APGNS ensures high standards of geoscience practice and education in Nova Scotia by setting guidelines for admissions, providing disciplinary oversight of the profession, and preventing misuse of the title "geoscientist" by unlicensed professionals. As a student studying the geosciences, it can be challenging to understand the mandates of professional associations, the educational requirements for membership, and the mentoring process required prior to full professional licensure. We have designed this presentation to help you understand the purpose of APGNS, to help you navigate the best course selections for your chosen degrees, and to introduce you to the requirements of professional membership. There will be plenty of time for open discussion and Q&A to ensure that all students in attendance are confident in their course requirements and can develop individual plans for a successful early career in the geosciences.

A little about the presenters:

Maureen Matthew, M.Sc. P.Geo. - Chair of the Student Committee (APGNS)

Maureen is a professional engineering geologist, and current PhD candidate in the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University. She has been practicing applied geoscience in support of civil and resource developments for over 15 years and has been a licensed professional since 2012. Before taking academic leave, Maureen was an Associate and Team Lead of the geotechnical engineering group at Stantec Consulting Ltd. She is passionate about discussing the wide range of career opportunities that exist for geoscience students. 

Scott Conrod, B.Sc. P.Geo. - President of APGNS

Maureen will be joined by Scott Conrod, the current President of APGNS during this presentation. Scott is the Market Sector Lead, Oil and Gas, Canada with Arcadis Canada Inc. and has been a registered professional geoscientists since 2002. Scott is currently leading APGNS through an exciting year that will see a refresh to the management and operations of the Association. He will be available to answer any questions students have about the direction of APGNS.
