Certificate in Health, Wellness & Sport in Society
Are you interested in diversity and inclusion, accessibility, mental health, working in the personal wellness or recreation fields, or something similar? The Certificate in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society is designed for students who want to improve their knowledge of health, wellness and sport in their social context and who welcome the opportunity to follow an intense but defined interdisciplinary curriculum that combines a variety of academic disciplines.
What can I do with the certificate?
This program provides students with a way to organize their interests in health, wellness and sport while obtaining a solid foundation in the social sciences and humanities. The certificate will help prepare students for further study in a variety of academic disciplines and for careers in related fields.
Application requirements
The certificate is intended to complement a student’s degree while providing an additional academic experience. Students must be majoring in another department or program at Saint Mary’s, and must have completed a minimum of 18 credit hours with a GPA of at least 2.0 (C) before entering the program. There is a special focus on interdisciplinarity and on experiential learning in this certificate.
How to apply
Current students can apply to the Certificate in Health, Wellness & Sport in Society by filling out an application found in the Student Forms section of our website.
If you are a prospective student, first apply to Saint Mary’s for the academic program of your choice (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science, etc.) and indicate your intention to complete the Certificate of Health, Wellness & Sport in Society on your application. If you are accepted to Saint Mary’s, then contact the BA Advising Centre (BAadvising@smu.ca) to discuss your course plan, your intention to complete the certificate, and how to apply.
Course requirements
Total of 24 credits. Nine required credits:
- HWSS 2000: Introduction to Health, Wellness and Sport in Society
- HWSS 3000: Experiential Learning in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society
- HWSS 4000: Seminar in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society
The other 15 credits can be counted toward both your major and the certificate. Examples include: Health and Social Policy in Atlantic Canada, Applied Sport Psychology, Sociology of Health and Illness, and Philosophy of Sport. Consult the Academic Calendar for additional options.
