Information for Prospective MSc and PhD Students
Saint Mary's offers two thesis-based graduate degrees in Applied Science:
- 2-year MSc in Applied Science (with Co-op option available!)
- 3-year PhD in Applied Science
In both degrees, students generally undertake a mix of coursework and research during their first two semesters (eight months). The remainder of the student's time in each program is then largely spent doing research.
Students can take on research projects in a wide variety of scientific fields, including:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Finance, Information Systems, and Management Science
- Geography
- Geology
- Mathematics and Computing Science
- Anthropology/Forensic Science
- Physics
- Psychology
- Engineering
- Environmental Science

Important Note:
If you are interested in enrolling in either the MSc or PhD in Applied Science, you first need to find a Saint Mary's faculty member who is willing to supervise your research. To find a supervisor, prospective students should use the departmental links above to help locate and contact Saint Mary's faculty members who are conducting research in disciplines of interest.
Students are not accepted into Applied Science programs until they have a designated supervisor. Students should not apply to the program until a faculty member has agreed to supervise them.
