Opening & "Big Ideas" Trade Show

Not your‌ typical opening ceremonies. Let's drop the long, boring speeches and get to know each other over a glass of wine. Mingle with other student business owners as well as your Master Class Instructors. There might even be some funders in the crowd. Oh, and don't forget to tell us about your really cool business and we might choose you for the "Big Ideas" trade show!

Dinner & Keynote

We're switching things up this year based on your feedback. Panels are so passé so we're going bigger for the dinner. Join us for dinner and hear from our Keynote speaker.

Not coming to the conference but want to catch the keynote? Email us for information on tickets for the event at startingpoint@smu.ca.

Master Classes

Soak in the knowledge at Master Classes. Learn from the best in their field as they teach topics relevant to being a student entrepreneur. Delivered by entrepreneurial individuals who are best in their field. Topics will follow five main themes:

  • From the Ground Up (start up)
  • Stretching Your Reach (growth)
  • Cutting the Right Corners (efficiency)
  • Staying Afloat (sustainability)
  • Trail Blazing (innovation)

Funder Speed Dating

Pitch your business to a group of funders. Better make it short and sweet though; you'll only have five minutes to pitch before you move on to the next funder. There is guarenteed money in the room and a limited number of seats so there's a good chance you'll be walking away with some cash for your business.

This session is by application only, to apply to Funder Speed Dating, submit your video here!

Iron Entrepreneur

Do you have a mind for ideas? Are you always coming up with cool ways to make things better? We are looking to rebrand the our popular Ideation Tournament as the Iron Entrepreneur adding a “triathlon” component where students cannot move on to the next task until they have completed the previous. All teams must finish within the allotted time in order to be considered for judging. To assist with this, we will be pairing each team with an alumni entrepreneur who will be available to provide advice and mentorship throughout the competition.

After it's all said and done, we will be giving out awards to well deserving entrepreneurs who have shown exceptional entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Winners from the Ideation Tournament will also be announced along with the recepients of funding from the Funder Speed Dating.

Christine Campbell & Blake Johnston

Christine Campbell launched her new album, Roller Coaster, in March 2017. It is a true representation of her diverse influences – from hard rock and 70’s rock to roots and blues. Christine has attracted top-calibre artists like Jeff Burrows of The Tea Party to add their musical talent to the songs. And Classified’s co-writing and co-production pumps up the radio-ready element. Roller Coaster offers a narrative of a small town Prince Edward Island girl who has become a powerful performer, known for her unapologetic mastery of guitar, piano and rock vocals.

Blake Johnston, best known as guitar-slinging powerhouse vocalist for The Stogies. Twice finalists at Indie-week, with their last album "Hoot" produced by John Landry of "The Stanfields". Blake has now branched off to showcase his soulful side and has been sharing the stage with Christine Campbell.

Together, they have been making synergistic waves, opening for Jann Arden and Bob Seger. With their dueling guitars, strong vocal harmonies and collaborative song writing, the two create an incredible experience you won't forget.
