Security Information

Special Event Security

University Security provides security at various special events such as society functions, Huskies' football, basketball, and hockey games, and various other on-campus events.

Officers are responsible to ensure proper admission to the function; ensure liquor regulations are enforced; provide assistance and information to attendants.

Events booked on Saint Mary's campus will be subjected to a risk assessment and will be provided security services if required.

24 Hour Dispatch Desk

All information is relayed in and out of the Dispatch Security Centre (found in MM020). It operates on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week. Any safety or security concerns on campus should be directed to the Security Dispatcher. This staff member is responsible for various tasks, ranging from providing general information, First Aid assistance, lost and found, and alarm response (fire, burglar, etc.).

Husky Patrol Van

University Security in conjunction with the Saint Mary's University Student Association provides a safe drive home program known as 'Husky Van Patrol'. There are two vans that operate Sunday to Friday between the times of 6:30 pm to 12:00 midnight.

To access the service, you must be:

  1. A SMU student.
  2. Produce a SMU I.D. card.
  3. Student must be traveling directly to or from SMU.

The safe drive is available in the areas as far west as Connaught, as far north as Young, as far south Barrington and Morris, turns up Morris to South Park. See map below for details.

No intoxicated persons are permitted in the van. Transportation of alcohol is prohibited, and no consumption of food or beverages is permitted. Smoking is also prohibited.

Students can use this service by contacting the SUB Info Desk at 902-496-8755 for off campus pick-ups or by going to the Student Centre Info Desk. For more information or service inquiries, please call 902-496-8700.

Campus Patrol

Full time Security Staff patrol the Campus, 24 hous a day 7 days a week. The patrol is responsible for dynamic security on campus ensuring all buildings and doors on the entire campus are appropriately locked, on-campus safe walks, and other matters or events that occur in the course of the evening.

Room Lock/Unlock and Room Bookings Process

University Security is responsible for securing all rooms outside the Residence buildings and the Tower. All spaces are scheduled through Conference Services, the Registrars Office, Department of Continuing Education, or ITSS. Most rooms are to be booked through Conference Services.

If in the event Conference services DOES NOT service the booking for the room you wish to book, your request will come to University Security by the following method:

  1. Fill out the Lock/Unlock Request Form . Word Document: DOC, Acrobat PDF: PDF
  2. Have the acting Chair or Dean of the Department acknowledge your request then THEY MUST forward the completed form to
  3. Security will open the door 15-30 minutes in advance of the time requested.

PLEASE NOTE: Doors which are not the responsibility of Conference Services WILL NOT be opened without authorization from the Department Head who governs the room being requested

After Hours Access

Should you require access to a building / office after hours, bring your Faculty ID or your Student ID with a signed letter of authorization from your department head to the Security Center in McNally Main 016 and a Full-time Security Officer will assist you.

In special circumstance authorization prior to occasion can be forwarded to the Manager of Security Services. Only those authorized will be permitted into a building after hours.

Incidents are investigated by full time security officers. The University security manager also becomes involved when necessary.

Access Card/Key Requests

University Security is responsible for issuing Access Cards and authorizing key requests. Access cards are the property of Saint Mary's University. All cards and keys must be returned to the department at termination/completion of position.

Requests are to be sent to Facilities Management who initially processes the requests and sends them to Campus Security. Visit their Online Key / Access Card Request Form (PDF) here.

If the access card or key is lost or stolen, please notify Security Services immediately. A replacement can be issued by following the same procedure as above but user will be charged a $10.00 fee.

Remember the access card is equivalent to a key by providing access to office spaces and restricted areas. Therefore, there are de-activation dates of one year (unless stated otherwise) following the activation date applied to each card for security purposes.

First Aid Stations and Qualified Responders

All full time Security Officers are trained in First Aid response. First Aid responders are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Safe Walk on University Campus:

Saint Mary's University Security offers the safe walk program to all members of the University community and visitors. A University Security Officers will provide an escort on the University property. The request can be made by contacting University Security at 902-420-5577.

This is a 24 hour, 7 day a week service offered by University Security.

Lone Worker/Student:

The lone worker/student program is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are working or studing at night and would like University security to check on your safety please call University security at 902-420-5577.
