Boyd worked for several years as a research scientist studying bacterial interactions with humans and animals. She specializes in bacterial virulence factor gene expression during infections using techniques that include molecular biology, genomics, and microscopy.

In 2008 Dr. Boyd switched careers to undergraduate biology teaching and has taught biology students at local Halifax universities (Dalhousie, MSVU and St. Mary’s) as well as Nationally (University of Calgary) and Internationally (American University of Nigeria).
