AWELL is a two-day conference designed for faculty, instructors, and writing centre professionals who teach and tutor ELL students. The goal of the conference is to provide tools and approaches in a workshop format that may be used directly in the classroom and tutoring sessions.

The AWELL 2014 Conference Schedule has workshops and sessions across the two days, as well as a round table at the end of day two.
Presenters are representing several schools, including Western University, Nova Scotia School of Art and Design, Dalhousie University, Michigan State University, Laurier University, University of Toronto, as well as Saint Mary's University.
Dr. Alister Cumming | Writing from Sources for Academic Purposes: A Synthesis of Recent Research

Professor, Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning; Former Head of the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies (CERLL), University of Toronto
Alister Cumming is professor in the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies (CERLL, formerly the Modern Language Centre) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, where he has been employed since 1991 following briefer periods at McGill University, the University of British Columbia, Carleton University, and Concordia University. He was the Head of CERLL from to 1993 to 2013. His research and teaching focus on writing in second languages, language assessment, language program evaluation and policies, and research methods. Alister has published extensively on these topics, serves on the editorial boards of a dozen scholarly and professional journals, and has participated in numerous granting agencies in Canada and internationally. Alister is currently the Executive Director of Language Learning, a journal he edited in the 1990s. From 2014 to 2017 he holds a Chang Jiang Scholarship at the National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where he is directing a project on English writing development at the undergraduate and graduate levels across 10 universities in China. For the past five years he chaired the TOEFL Committee of Examiners at Educational Testing Service, Princeton. Alister’s recent books are Adolescent Literacies in a Multicultural Context (Routledge Publishers, 2012), A Synthesis of Research on Second Language Writing in English (with Ilona Leki and Tony Silva, Routledge Publishers, 2008), and Goals for Academic Writing (John Benjamins, 2006). Alister received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1988, MA and BA from the University of British Columbia in 1979 and 1975 respectively, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Copenhagen in 2009.
Director, Writing and Cross-Cultural Services, Huron University College at Western
Theresa Hyland has a doctorate in Second Language Acquisition from University of Toronto with an area of specialization in multilingual students’ writing. Theresa has taught writing to both Canadian and multilingual students for more than 25 years in a variety of contexts, and is currently Director of Cross-cultural and Writing Services at Huron University College. Her research interests include disciplinary and genre-regulated expectations of faculty for their students' writing, writing within the academic community of practice, and developing effective strategies for multilingual students' critical reading and writing practices.
Academic Services Manager, TESL Centre, Saint Mary’s University
Julian L’Enfant has been a Cambridge English teacher trainer and assessor for the last 13 years and has trained teachers in many parts of the world including Europe and North and South America. He was the Director of Studies at International House Bydgoszcz, Poland and Director of Teacher Training at a Cambridge English teaching awards centre in Halifax before becoming the Academic Services Manager at the Saint Mary’s University TESL Centre. His current interests include Plurilingual Education and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), learning with technology and digital literacies, the Common European Framework of Reference, developing intercultural communicative competence and task-based learning and teaching. He is currently doing an MEd/MSc in Plurilingual Education with the University of Aberdeen, UK, and his research interests include promoting plurilingual and pluricultural competences in second language and subject classrooms and creating space for students’ languages, culture and traditions in the classroom.
