Alliance Française SMU Annual Prize: Taryn Hines

Each year, a top French major from the metro universities (Dalhousie, Mount Saint Vincent, Sainte-Anne and, of course, Saint Mary's) is selected to receive an award of excellence given by the Alliance Française of Halifax. Taryn Hines, a third-year French major from Halifax, was selected by our Department to receive this recognition.

The four winners of the Alliance Française Award of Excellence then get to compete for a more significant prize - an all expenses paid trip to Paris offered by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among the four best from each university, our very own Taryn Hines walked away with the honours, based on the strength on her essay as determined by a jury from the French Consulate in Moncton. Elise Miranda, the Cultural Attaché, made the announcement and presented the prize.

This August, Taryn will enjoy a two-week cultural extravaganza in Paris to participate in the Rencontres Internationales de Jeunes, where she will meet other talented students from around the world and exchange her own experience in French with them.

Taryn's success represents a back-to-back win for a Saint Mary's French major and the third victory in the last four years for a Saint Mary's French student, when the French Embassy first created the RIJ trip. Past recipients of the French Consulate award were Justin Bonin (2010) and Laura Connors (2008) who also won the national QE II Silver Jubilee Prize for study in a French-speaking university.

By virtue of a nice twist of fate, Taryn's trip to Paris was announced at the yearly meeting of the Alliance Française on March 21, the International Day of la Francophonie, a day of recognition of the French presence worldwide.

‌   ‌‌

Congratulations to Stéphanie Mrad, recipient of the 2015-2016 Prix de l’Alliance Française. From left to right: Dr. Chris Elson (Dalhousie), Mme Isabelle Pédot (Director, Alliance Française), Stéphanie Mrad (Saint Mary’s University), and Mme Lucie Taussig (Communication Coordinator, Alliance française).

Each year, in honour of the Journée international de la francophonie (20 March), a top student majoring in French at Dalhousie, Memorial, Mount Saint Vincent, or Saint Mary's is selected to receive an award of excellence given by the Alliance Française of Halifax. Stéphanie Mrad, a third-year French major, has been chosen by our Department to receive this prize.

The awards, along with a Grand Prize (a trip to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and participation in its Francoforum), were presented to the four winners during an official ceremony at Mount Saint Vincent. The President of the Alliance française of Halifax, Mme Abou Assan, gave the opening speech. Mme Françoise Enguehard, the invited keynote speaker, told us about Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, her experience as a parent in a minority situation, and her involvement as President of Société nationale de l’Acadie. Mme Enguehard’s article on the Prix d’excellence can be found here: “Souligner l’excellence”.
