About Saint Mary's
Generosity Takes Centre Stage at One World Alumni Awards Gala
16 October, 2015
Representatives from Peaceful Schools International, the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning, and Brigadoon assemble for the unveiling of the top prize with Pam Nightingale, representing presenting sponsor, TD Insurance, Mary-Evelyn Ternan, President of the Alumni Association, and Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray, President of Saint Mary’s University.
The non-profit landscape shifted at Saint Mary’s University’s One World Alumni Awards Gala with an announcement that this year’s top award recipient, Brigadoon, would share its prize money with The McPhee Centre for Creative Learning and Peaceful Schools International.
“It was a remarkable display of giving and one that resonates strongly with Saint Mary’s culture of civic engagement and social responsibility,” says Saint Mary’s University President Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray. “This one action will open many doors and pave the way for countless collaborations.”
A panel of Alumni Association judges and an online vote decide Saint Mary’s One World Alumni Award. The 25,000 votes cast this year saw the $10,000 top prize go to Brigadoon, with prizes of $2,500 each for the two runners-up. Co-emcees for the awards gala, Christopher Webb (BA’97) and Cheil Reyes (BComm’14), had the pleasure of calling upon Brigadoon’s founder David McKeage (BComm’91) to accept his organization’s prize and announce the decision to share the winnings, leaving each organization with $5,000.
“This generosity has opened a new world of opportunities to work together,” says Saint Mary’s alumna Karn Nichols (MBA’09), Chair of the Board for The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning and Manager of Human Resources for Devonian Coast Wineries. “I’d have greater hope for the world if there were more organizations like Brigadoon.”
Saint Mary’s Alumni Association established the One World Alumni Awards in 2011 as a way to celebrate the work done by Santamarians and organizations to improve our communities. Past recipients include Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia (2014), The Empathy Factory (2013), Catapult Leadership Society (2012), and Wadeng Wings of Hope (2011).
The University would like to acknowledge the generosity of our affinity partner, TD Insurance, in providing the financial support that makes it possible to recognize the impact of charities through One World Alumni Awards.
