Each year, the Saint Mary’s graduating class tries to give back to the University through a Grad Class Gift.  The 2016 Grad Class chose to give this year’s gift to SMU’s Healthy Minds Team, a group of students who volunteer their time to promote awareness of mental health issues and mental well-being. Overall, the Grad Class raised $2,975 for the Healthy Minds Team! The Alumni Association, keen to appreciate all the hard work and fundraising efforts, matched their donation to provide the Healthy Minds Team with a total of $3,950 for this upcoming year’s programming for students.

In past years, many of the graduating classes decided to dedicate a tree or a bench to the University. But instead of giving a physical gift this year, the Grad Class Executives – with consultation from the student body - decided to give back to on campus resources that were helping students. “We took student input on what their main concerns were,” said Makenzie Way. “Mental health was a big priority.” Due to the popularity of the Healthy Minds Team’s events and campaigns, the 2016 Grad Class decided that was where their gift should go.

Brent Conrad, who oversees the Healthy Minds Team and is a psychologist in the Counselling Centre here on campus, believes that the funding from the Grad Class Gift will make a huge difference. “Funding makes it possible for us to do events with mental health guest speakers, along with continuing to work on our current plans.”

Thank you Grads of 2016! Your contribution to the Healthy Minds Team will help countless students in the future.
