We have received reports of phishing emails that have been targeted at the Saint Mary’s community. In some cases, the phishing email is well crafted to look like it comes from someone on campus.

Phishing emails can be serious as they can be used to infect your system with malicious software or steal personal information. We will advise that everyone be vigilant and cautious when attending to their SMU emails. We will also encourage that any suspicious email activity on your SMU email be reported to the ITSS Help Desk. For more information, please visit:

Network problems Concluded

The network issues intermittently affecting various services have been resolved. ITSS is continuing to monitor all systems.

Wireless Network Maintenance Concluded

On Tuesday morning from 8am to 8:30am, there will be maintenance on the wireless network authentication system, resulting in downtime of 15-30 minutes. Wifi sessions that are already established will NOT be impacted, but any new connections will be unable to authenticate while the system is down.

On Monday morning from 8am to 9:30am, ITSS will be updating the wireless network controllers. This will result in periodic brief interruptions to wifi service, as the controllers are rebooted.

We are aware of a problem with the wireless access ID's not being visible or allowing users to connect. ITSS is working on resolving this issue.

Internet Performance Issues Concluded

ITSS is aware that there are some performance issues with the internet and technical resources are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

Residence Access Concluded

ITSS will be upgrading the server that manages network connections in residence that use a cable and wall jack. There will be brief interruptions to the service during the change over time.

We do not anticipate any issues for currently registered devices – your existing registration should migrate smoothly to the new server. However, if you do experience any problems after this change is made, the new system will allow you to register your devices yourself through the web. To do so, after the change on May 3:

1. Open a web browser and go to netreg.smu.ca. If you’re device does not have a browser then you will have to ask the ITSS helpdesk to register your device under your S#.

2. Enter your s-number and password, read the Acceptable Computer Usage Policy if you have not already done so and click if you accept the terms click the Accept button.

3. After successfully registering shut down for at least one minute to complete the Netreg process.
