Department of English Language and Literature
The Saint Mary's University English Society arranges social and cultural events through the year. Each year the students publish a journal of creative writing; recent volumes have been entitled The Cleresiad (2006), Changelings (2003), Lockpicks (2002), Earth Colours and Waves of Creatures (2001), Cardhouses (2000), Branches (1999), Small Bones (1998), and Beach Glass (1996).
The English Department also organizes and hosts The Gallery Reading Series, which features Canadian writers reading from their own works. In the past we have had readings by poets such as Mark Abley, Robert Bringhurst, Anne Carson, Mary Dalton, M. Travis Lane, Dennis Lee, Don McKay, Anne Michaels, Erin Mouré, Eric Ormsby, Sue Sinclair, Bruce Taylor, and Jan Zwicky, and by fiction writers such as Catherine Bush, Joan Clark, Austin Clarke, Lynn Coady, Matt Cohen, Elizabeth Harvor, Greg Hollingshead, Janice Kulyk Keefer, John Metcalf, David Adams Richards, Nino Ricci, and Jane Urquhart. Most winters Saint Mary's also hosts the one-week stay of a short-term writer-in-residence. In the past decade, these writers have included Roo Borson, Marilyn Bowering, Joan Clark, Richard Cumyn, Don Domonski, Marilyn Dumont, Tim Lilburn, Bryden MacDonald, John Steffler, Michael Redhill and Michael Winter.
