The Co-operative Education option allows you to apply your knowledge, develop skills and gain confidence, while you earn money to help pay for tuition. Co-op consists of three, four-months work terms.
Participating in the Co-op program offers numerous professional advantages, including standing out to potential employers, enhancing your resume, extending your learning beyond the classroom, gaining deeper insights into your field of study, establishing a network of valuable contacts and experiencing the realities of full-time work.

These requirements listed above are the normal minimums. Satisfying these requirements does not guarantee admission.
*Bachelor of Engineering students: please keep in mind the co-op program is intended for students in year 3 to 5, with the intention to run from summer year 3 to winter/summer year 4 (12-16 months total). Applications will open in January 2027 for B.Eng.
Please be advised for Commerce students: acceptance into co-op program does not mean acceptance into the co-op for credit course. Students will need to meet with their Academic Advisor to register for this course. Prepared to show proof of 2.7 CGPA and another other prerequisites deemed necessary by faculty.
The Co-op Office will contact applicants directly by email to inform them whether or not they are accepted into the SMU Co-op program.Students are also reminded that they may be required to withdraw from the program if they fail to meet other on-going program requirements. Co-op Application Process
Step 1 - Students self-enroll and complete Job Search Readiness course on Brightspace. After this 60-90-minute course, students will have the foundational knowledge to apply to co-op with a job search ready resume that will be evaluated as part of the entrance requirements. On Brightspace, select Discover then search Job Search Readiness. Failure to complete this course could hinder your acceptance in the co-op program.
Step 2 - Application - applications open on Career360° and students can apply for co-op during the application window.
Step 3 - Acceptance - students who successfully demonstrate a job search ready resume and meet eligibility requirements for their faculty, are then officially accepted into the co-op program.
