Sara Lee Lewis has been dedicated to enriching the cultural lives of children for thirty years. In 1971, the Montreal, Quebec native moved to Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Lewis has a BA in English Literature and Sociology from McGill University and was involved in journalism and theatre promotion.

A year after she came to Nova Scotia, Lewis co-founded Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. She worked with the company in different capacities including her appointment as Managing Director in 1991. Under her management, the company has gained international recognition with performances on four continents. Mermaid Theatre is also well known for its work in Nova Scotia through its public and school performances. Lewis has also been a champion of the Nova Scotia arts community. She has contributed to cultural organizations, volunteer committees and boards of directors at the local, national and international level.

Lewis became a Member of the Order of Canada in April, 2000 and received the Canadian Progress Club Women of Excellence Award for Arts and Culture in November, 2000. Lewis will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters from Saint Mary's University.
